(Tyler, Texas) With more people moving to Tyler and the surrounding areas, the need for Tyler to change and look to the future is very important. Looking forward and planning now can ensure that the needs of future residents will be met.

Tyler Planning for Future Growth

As new projects get presented and begin to take shape, the city and county continually look at ways to improve things. Take the Smith County Courthouse, for instance. With the new courthouse, architects have already considered the need for additional space in the future and have planned and incorporated that into the design of the building.

Then the City of Tyler and Smith County entered into a partnership to redesign the downtown square. Work on this project began this week (September 9), and within a few years, it will have transformed the look, feel, and how you get around downtown.

High-Speed Rail Across Texas

Tyler isn’t the only city planning ahead; the state of Texas is looking at plans to bring high-speed rail to the Lone Star State. Plans are in the works for bullet train service between Dallas and Houston along the I-35 corridor. At the same time, there are plans to bring high-speed rail service through East Texas along the I-20 corridor.

Transportation is a big consideration when planning for future growth and how people will move around.

Tyler MPO Exploring Light Rail Options

The Tyler Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (Tyler MPO) is seeking input from residents on the possibility of introducing light rail service to Tyler and Smith County. Tyler residents now have the chance to shape the future of local transit.

How Residents Can Get Involved

There will be a virtual town hall meeting on Tuesday, September 23, at 4 p.m. that will give residents the opportunity to share their ideas on the potential for this service.  Or you may give your input via an online survey.

Tyler MPO and the City of Tyler have already conducted studies to examine the possibilities of rail service. They have even evaluated the possibility of limited trolley service on existing rail lines within Tyler and the availability of connecting those lines to eventually access future rail service along the I-20 corridor.
