George Lindsey, who spent nearly 30 years on the “Andy Griffith Show,” died yesterday at the age of 83, according to multiple reports. He was known affectionately as the grinning service attendant, Goober, on the show, which aired from 1964 to 1968, and its successor, ”Mayberry RFD” from 1968 to 1971.

The beanie-wearing Goober also played the same character on “Hee Haw” from 1971 until it went off the air in 1993.

In a statement released through the funeral home, Andy Griffith says he spoke to Lindsey just a few days ago. Griffith says the last thing they said to each other was, "I love you."

Lindsey died early Sunday of a brief illness. Funeral arrangements are pending.
