CNN is reporting that voters in North Carolina have passed a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

The website reports that more than 1.5 million votes have been counted, and an overwhelming 61 percent voted for the amendment. The amendment would include in the state constitution, "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state."

Support for the bill grew last week when renowned evangelist Billy Graham spoke in favor of the amendment in a rare political statement.

Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and the District of Columbia currently recognize same-sex marriages.
