We have all met them. Those certain people. They radiate confidence and frankly, just being with them makes you feel more confident, too. They seem to know what to say and when, how to say it, and how to charm most humans in most situations. Oh, and quite often they look amazing, too. Ah, those bearers of charisma. To echo an old Maybelline campaign, "maybe they're born with it." Oh, but are they though?

For some people, the idea of cultivating charisma seems either antiquated or snobbish. But, let's be clear--it can affect every single part of your life--both personally and professionally. Actually, some of the most charismatic people I've ever met have some of the most genuine. I'm not sure why exactly. Although one can't help but appreciate the fact that they've gone out of their way to be a better version of themselves. It seems, well polite. Another antiquated concept? I don't think so.

Not too long ago, the New York Times published an article about the things that make some people charismatic, and even offers suggestions to help the rest of us. They'd interviewed and shared the advice of charisma coach Olivia Fox Cabane who has also authored the book “The Charisma Myth.”  Her basic premise on how to cultivate charisma is based on what she calls the "three pillars." They include Presence, Power, and Warmth.

Presence is that quality of being "centered in the moment."

Power refers, not to status, but rather to "breaking down self-imposed barriers." This one is more about resting in who you really are rather than "posing."

Warmth is projecting kindness in your dealings with people. Surrounding them with a feeling of acceptance. Charismatic people are able to do this even with those they've just met. How charming. ;)
