Beware of the CenterPoint Energy Scam Going Around Texas
Thieves are the lowest of the low. Those thieves don't always have to be breaking into your home or car either. Some thieves like to be tricky and offer a great deal or a nice gift. These thieves are smart, too. They'll disguise themselves as a worker for a particular company and try to gain access to somewhere they don't belong. In this case, scammers will actually come to your door saying they're from CenterPoint Energy and try to look at your meter. They'll even call or text you with disconnection threats unless you pay immediately.

CenterPoint Energy is sending out warnings to it's customers that scammers are trying their hardest to steal money from you. In this case, scammers have actually shown up at a person's house requesting to check their meter. The scammers will even call or text a person and threaten to disconnect their service unless they pay immediately.
How CenterPoint Energy Handles Bill Payments
CenterPoint Energy is telling it's customers they would never call a customer to receive payment to prevent disconnection. They also do not ask for payments using a pre-paid debit card, cryptocurrency, a gift card or a cash app like Venmo.
If a CenterPoint Energy employee does come to your house, it would be for a service call made by you and that employee would have an official badge to show you when they arrive for the work. CenterPoint Energy will also be displayed on your caller ID if the company is making a call to you.
What to Do if You Have Been Contacted by a Scammer
If you receive a phone call that you feel is from a scammer, just hang up. You can report the incident to CenterPoint Energy through their customer service portal on their website. If you feel you are a victim of a scam, file a report with your local police department.
