Governor Abbott Now Orders Ban on New Chinese AI Startup
Technology in Texas and across the world right now is changing at a rapid speed. It was just weeks ago that we all thought that TikTok would be going away, but that isn’t the case, at least for now.
According to NBCDFW, recently, Governor Greg Abbott ordered a ban on DeepSeek which is a Chinese AI startup company for all government devices.
DeepSeek Has Been growing in Popularity recently
It seems like AI technology is moving very quickly, so if you haven’t heard of DeepSeek before, you’re not alone. But that isn’t the only social media app that has been banned by Abbott on government devices.
What Other Social Media Apps are Not Allowed on Texas Government Devices?
Besides the ban on DeepSeek, other social media apps that are banned include Xiaohongshu or more commonly known as RedNote. RedNote allows users to upload short-videos similar to TikTok.

The other app that was banned is called Lemon8. Lemon 8 is owned by the parent company of TikTok, Bytedance.
Governor Abbott Has Banned Apps for Security
As you can imagine, the ban on these specific apps is all about safety.
Governor Abbott has already banned TikTok from all government devices, as the app could still be banned in the U.S. if its parent company doesn’t sell.
This new ban on DeepSeek comes as its popularity is growing rapidly as it competes with the industry leader OpenAI.
The conversation regarding banning certain apps on government devices won’t be ending anytime soon. But I appreciate those trying to make sure our information isn’t readily available for people wanting to obtain it online.
