The Ark-La-Tex is about to be squarely on the map, but honestly? It’s for a reason that’ll make your stomach drop.

Netflix is dropping its summer true-crime heavyweight, Maternal Instinct, on June 12th. When I first saw the trailer, I had that surreal, slow-blink moment where I thought, “Wait… is this play about us?” Turns out, it is.

It shines a global spotlight on a horrifying case that shook the small town of New Boston, Texas, to its very core.

Back in October 2020, Taylor Rene Parker faked a pregnancy for ten months, silicone belly, forged ultrasounds, gender reveals, the whole nine yards, all to keep her boyfriend. But the deception ended in pure horror when she brutally murdered 21-year-old Reagan Simmons-Hancock to steal her unborn baby.

When a state trooper pulled Parker over for speeding in DeKalb, Texas, she was covered in blood with the deceased infant in her lap, claiming she’d just given birth on the side of the road. Her web of lies dissolved minutes later at an Oklahoma hospital. By November 2022, a Bowie County jury sentenced her to death.

Netflix describes it as a story of a perfect relationship that unraveled into an "unthinkable crime." It’s a heavy, harrowing watch, but our local history is about to be front and center on millions of screens worldwide.

Will you be tuning in on June 12th, or is this one a little too close to home for comfort? Let me know your thoughts.
