The first official weekend of 2024 is here, so what are you going to do this weekend in East Texas? Celebrate Malakoff High School football's championship year. Take down the remainder of the outside Christmas decorations. Stay committed to your New Year's resolutions. Hang out at home and have a relaxing weekend after the past few being filled with parties and family.

I've got a feeling it could be a combination of all of the above! Now if one of your resolutions was to learn a new hobby or get more physically fit you're in luck because several events are happening this weekend that would be perfect for you.

This weekend you can learn how to fly fish, play disc golf, go on a hike, and check out the fitness scene at an expo event in Tyler.

Everyone is also invited to attend the city-wide parade in Malakoff on Saturday afternoon to show support for the state champs!

2024 Longview Challenge

Take on disc golf courses in the woods of Hinsley Park and the creek at Guthrie Park. Amateur, recreational, junior players to pro players are welcome to participate in this challenge.

First Saturday Hike At Tyler State Park

Tyler State Park - Tyler

This hike is a group-led hike and the group decides which trails the group follows. Bring your water, bug repellent, sunscreen, and dogs on a leash for this trip through nature. There is an admission charge to the state park.

Beginner Fly Fishing Class

Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center - Athens

Adults and youth can learn the art of fly fishing from master fly fishers. Equipment will be provided, but students may bring their own. Instruction will focus on equipment, equipment selection, basic knot tying, casting, and casting fundamentals. The $50 fee for the class will include lunch.

Brookshire Conference Center - Tyler

FitCity Tyler leaders have created an event, campaign, and programs to promote fitness, nutrition, workplace wellness, children's health, and disease prevention for East Texans. Vendors, demonstrations, and more will be happening at this free event.

Gregg County 4-H and FFA members to raise, show, and sell projects to better provide for their understanding of the agriculture industry.

Celebrate the beginning of Mardi Gras season with the annual 12th Night Party. Wear your craziest hat and have some great food, drinks, and fun. There is an admission charge for this event.
