Public Transit Overhaul: Tyler Transit’s Move to Microtransit in 2025 Explained
The City Of Tyler Announced A Massive New "Microtransit" system starting in 2025 but what is it?
In a move that many are calling "controversial", Tyler Transit announced plans to change to a "microtransit" service in 2025 but many are trying to figure out what that means for residents who rely on public transportation in the city.
The new service is set to begin on Monday, Jan. 13 with new payment methods as well. Here's what we know.
What Is Microtransit?
Microtransit refers to a flexible, on-demand transportation service that operates within a defined area, often providing a link between traditional public transit systems and passengers' final destinations.
It typically uses smaller vehicles like vans or shuttles and is designed to improve mobility in areas where traditional transit options, like buses, may not be efficient or cost-effective. Instead of standing at a stop waiting for the next bus, you can now request a ride when you get to the bus stop.
What Are The Benefits?
Some of microtransit's benefits include: Improved access to transit in areas with limited options, Reduction in last-mile/first-mile transportation gaps (connecting people to major transit hubs), a cost-effective alternative to private car ownership and it provides an environmentally friendly option by consolidating multiple trips into fewer vehicles.
Microtransit is often viewed as a complement to existing public transit systems, enhancing mobility and accessibility, particularly in suburban or rural areas.
So How Will This Work In Tyler?
All Tyler Transit bus stops will be used as pick-up locations for riders. The ride will take them directly to the doorstep of a destination within sight of the closest bus stop on any existing route.
The MicroTransit service will be split into three zones, with two drivers per zone. If a passenger's destination is in a different zone from where they are picked up, they will be taken to Stop 400 near the Bergfeld Center and Fire Station 7, where a driver will be waiting or arriving shortly to complete the trip.
In May 2024, Tyler Transit launched a pilot on-demand MicroTransit route for South Tyler and, in June, transitioned the Campus Connector route to a MicroTransit service as well and the city is reporting a reduction on fuel and mileage while the routes carried the same amount of passengers as the fixed service.
How Can I Schedule Or Book A Ride?
Riders will be able to book a ride by calling (903) 533-8057 from the bus stop or through the Tyler Transit app.
MicroTransit rides may be booked Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The cost for the on-demand service will be $1 per bus ride, unless a pass has been purchased and you can also purchase rides and passes through the Tyler Transit app.
