This County Has The #1 Highest Cancer Rates in Texas, Here’s Why

October is finally here in Texas and this is the month that we celebrate our breast cancer awareness survivors as well. The National Cancer Institution says cancer is a disease caused when cells divide uncontrollably and spread into surrounding tissues. Cancer is caused by changes to DNA and most cancer-causing DNA changes occur in sections of DNA called genes.

WHAT IS CANCER EXACTLY?

These changes are also called genetic changes. Cancer is definitely one of those things if it’s found in your family could be detrimental and truly life-changing if a family member or yourself has it. Sometimes you have to go through chemotherapy, sometimes a diet, and certain things will need to be altered and changed and unfortunately a lot of times there’s nothing you can do besides wait for the cancer to put you in a  predicament of death. Polk County has been named the number one highest case of cancer in Texas. According to the Houston Chronicle smoking is a major high risk in Polk County and of course, we are all aware that smoking itself can cause cancer, especially lung or cardiovascular disease.

WHAT COUNTY HAS THE MOST CANCER CASES?

Polk County residents also found themselves with a higher obesity rate and low physical activity rate, which of course, if you are obese, without being active, you could be contributing to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and especially cancers. Polk County was found from 2010 and 2014 to have the highest age-adjusted rates of all cancers in Texas. It is so important to make sure that you get your yearly screenings, Texas, you eat correctly and take care of yourself.
