Another meteor shower will light up the night sky in the coming nights. The Orionids meteor shower peaks October 21 and 22, but it’s active through November 7.

The Orionids usually produce 10 to 20 meteors per hour, but in some years in the past we’ve seen this shower produce as many as 75 meteors per hour.

These meteors radiate from the constellation Orion, which you can see above the eastern horizon. This radiant point will be highest in the sky around 5 am, making that time the best time to catch meteors streak across the night sky.

One thing that we will have to contend with is the moon. It will be near its third quarter phase, so it will be about half lit in the night sky.

If you are going to try and catch some meteors, it’s best to do so away from city lights. For best viewing it’s recommended that you lay flat on the ground and look straight up for some time. Don’t expect to look up and see something right away, it may take a little bit of time to catch some of these meteors.

The next couple of months are almost jam packed for meteor showers. The North Taurids meteor shower peaks November 11 and 12, the Leonids peak November 16 and 17, the Geminids peaks December 13 and 14, and late this year on December 21st and 22nd, we see the Ursids light up the night sky.
