The City of Longview is an East Texas city, founded in the early 1870's. The city is the county seat of Gregg County.
When the Southern Pacific Railroad extended its tracks from Marshall into Gregg County, Longview was formed. The town was formed on land purchased from Ossamus Hitch Methvin. The city is said to have gotten its name because of the view from Methvin's house.
The City of Longview has many attractions such as its historic downtown, outdoor recreation, dining and the Great East Texas Balloon Race. Annually the balloon race attracts hot air balloon pilots from around the world.
There are numerous colleges and universities in the area including LeTourneau University, Kilgore College and the University of Texas at Tyler's Longview University Center.
The weather in Tyler is typical for East Texas, being a bit unpredictable. During spring and summer months thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, damaging winds and tornados occur.
Summer months are hot and humid in the area. Winters are typically cool to mild, wet and pretty short.
