Grocery shopping is a weekly must for most Texas households. We often go to the store, pick up our favorite treats and must-haves, pay for them, and then take them home. But there are times when we should be cautious about the items we bring home from the grocery store.

It's inconvenient -- sometimes harmful -- but occasionally food items will be placed under recall. At times, the recall won't even take place until the grocery stores have already sold the product and some people have eaten it. This is precisely why it is important to stay up to date on products that have been recalled and know why.

It is possible that recalled food if ingested will cause injury or illness.

Why do foods get put under recall?

Typically a recall for food will occur when it is suspected that the item may cause consumers to become ill. Food producers will take the product off the market if this is the case, or in some instances, government agencies will request or require the food items to be taken off shelves.

According to Food Safety, there are many reasons a food recall can happen. some of which include:

  • Organisms like Salmonella or Cyclospora (not limited to these)
  • Foreign objects including but not limited to glass, metal
  • Major allergens not present on the product label

What should you do if you have a recalled food item in your kitchen?

If you find out you purchased food(s) that have been recalled, throw out the products. If the recall was due to germs or illness, then go ahead and clean and sanitize your kitchen well. These germs can spread.

You can stay up to date on food recalls by visiting the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website.
