The Big Beaners saga gets thicker and thicker with vulgar language and what seems as a deep-seated ill sentiment towards Mexican-Americans from Jesse Quakenbush, again this is an opinion of my own and doesn't represent Townsquare Media. The Amarillo attorney has unabashedly built a restaurant that seems to be a sentiment of racism, which has been getting a lot of television coverage and even Texas Monthly published a story about his endeavors to open such an establishment.

Even Tik Tok influencers are getting in on the happenings with the restaurant.

Abel Bosquez the president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) of Amarillo has asked Quakenbush to change the name in which the attorney basically stated that he had no intentions to do so.

Now the Amarillo branch of the NAACP in a letter to Quakenbush has addressed the Big Beaner controversy.

“The Amarillo Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) stands with and supports members of LLULAC in addressing the use of the offensive and racist term “beaners” in the name of your restaurant. We request that you strongly consider changing this repugnant name. The use of the word ‘beaners’ is tantamount to putting a knee on the throats of all persons of Mexican descent of cultural heritage in Amarillo and this great nation. This only continues the spiral of racial intolerance and racial hatred that is becoming politically correct in this country.”

A change.org petition initiated by Ali Ramos to have the Big Beaners name changed has garnered more than 8,000 signatures.

Quackenbush continues to defend the name and mascot logo of the restaurant and has stated on social media that the only people complaining were gays, freaks, and white talentless musicians.

Last week the Hispanic Chamber issued a statement that stated it would not take a side in the dispute.

This is obviously a heated issue that is confronting Amarillo in such a time of instability and racial tension. I do not accept morally wrong or offensive behavior of any kind, nor do I condone damage to property to express one's opinions. Use your voice and do it wisely. Your voice is the most powerful tool to use in such a tumultuous environment.

Stay safe, and peaceful
