This weekend we will have a blue moon... kind of. It'll be a full moon, but it won't be the color blue as the name might suggest. Let's explain why it's called a "blue moon."

The "blue moon" designation is normally given to the second full moon in a calendar month. That's not happening this weekend. However, it's because of the number of full moons occurring this season.

Typically, each of the four seasons in a calendar year has three full moons. However, this spring, we have four. When that occurs, the third full moon of that season is designated as a blue moon.

So no... IT WILL NOT BE BLUE. But rather a full moon that looks pretty much like every other full moon.

This full moon is also called the "flower moon" because it occurs in the month in which most flowers bloom across the Northern Hemisphere.

The moon officially becomes full at 4:11 p.m. on May 18, but it will look pretty full all weekend long.
