Farmer Dies in Suspected Killer Bee Attack Near Huntsville, Texas
Bryce Harold Smith, 75, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, after being stung by numerous bees. The attack happened on the man's property just south of Bedias, Texas.
According to a report from KCTV-5, Smith was stung approximately 60 times around the face and neck area. The lifelong resident of Bedias was clearing trees with a bulldozer when he apparently came into contact with the hive.
A person who was helping called 9-1-1, but tragically, Smith passed away from the numerous stings. Given the aggressive nature of the bees, it's believed that they are Africanized bees, also known as 'killer bees'.
Killer Bee Attacks in Texas
Africanized bee attacks in Texas are not frequent, but they are not unheard of. Several people in Texas have passed away after coming into close proximity to these aggressive insects.
An estimated 40,000 killer bees caused the death of man over a decade ago in Waco, an attack west of Fort Worth killed a man in 2021, and even pets have been attacked by these vicious bees.
Bees and Wasps can be greatly agitated by loud noises. If you have plans to mow a yard or pasture, it's a good idea to check for the presence of bees, wasps, nests, or hives before you mow or 'weed eat'.
Funeral Arrangements
Services for Bryce Smith will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 27 at First Baptist Church in Madisonville. Visitation and fellowship will happen on Friday, July 26 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Madisonville Funeral Home.
