(Tyler, Texas) Spring 2026 has started pretty dry in East Texas. According to Tyler Texas Weather, Tyler is approximately 5 inches behind on average rainfall so far this year. Tyler Pounds Regional Airport, the official recording station just west of the city, has recorded a total of 5.81 inches of rain so far. The average amount of rainfall 10.79 inches through March.

Surrounding counties aren't faring much better. Some counties have enacted burn bans because of the existing dry conditions. A weather change later this week could bring some much-needed rain. We need the rainfall, especially this time of the year.

Why Tyler Is Asking Residents to Limit Watering

With the higher temperatures and emerging grass and plants, more East Texans and Tyler residents are turning their irrigation systems on sooner than normal. I am one of those residents. With more watering taking place, the City of Tyler is asking residents to follow a voluntary watering schedule to help maintain constant water pressure in the system this spring and summer.

Tyler’s Recommended Watering Schedule

The City of Tyler is asking residents to limit outdoor watering to just two days per week. During those two days, they are encouraged to water before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. The city says watering during these times also helps to reduce evaporation.

Tyler residents are asked to water lawns on the following days:

  • Even-numbered addresses on Sunday and Thursday
  • Odd-numbered addresses on Saturday and Wednesday

To determine if your house qualifies as odd or even, use the last digit of your address.

Tyler Water Utilities director Kate Dietz says,

"We want to help people form good habits around outdoor watering before the temperatures spike in the summer months. Participating in efficient watering practices not only helps your lawn but also helps us maintain consistent water pressure across the city."

Tips to Avoid Overwatering Your Lawn

Things to check before setting the timer on the sprinkler system:

  • Inspect sprinkler heads for misalignment or damage
  • Make sure water is directed onto the lawn and not the sidewalk or street
  • Check the timer to ensure it is working properly

While the sprinklers are running, make sure you are not overwatering your lawn. Doing so can cause damage to your lawn and waste water. Overwatering can lead to shallow roots and increased runoff. Watering deeply and less frequently helps to promote a stronger root system and creates a healthier-looking lawn over time.

Simple Ways to Keep Your Lawn Healthy

After you've checked your sprinkler system and have it set on the two appropriate days, remember to turn it off after it rains or if the ground is still saturated from the last watering. One more tip from the city, for a good-looking lawn, mow your grass slightly higher so that it will keep in the moisture longer.

At this time, the conservation initiative is voluntary. Anything Tyler residents do now can help prevent a possible water shortage later on this summer.
