Seventy-five years ago, on a grill in Corpus Christi, Texas, the Whataburger was born. For the past 75 years, Texans have long called Whataburger and its many menu items the best burger in the Lone Star State.

Since then, Texans have been ordering and devouring their Whataburger creations while sharing and spreading the news about Whataburger's greatness. Even now, NFL legends who grew up eating Whataburgers have opened up franchises in Super Bowl territory, so there is something to Whataburger.

Burger Rivalries Across the Nation

As burger chains have grown over the years, so have the rivalries.

There is a constant battle between Texas and the rest of the nation for burger supremacy. Texans say Whataburger reigns supreme, of course. Californians say In-N-Out burgers are the best. East Coast residents will say White Castle rules the landscape.

Who wins the battle, well, that depends upon your tastebuds and national surveys, to be honest.

For years, Whataburger and In-N-Out have appeared at the top of the surveys as favorites thanks to their burger offerings. However, that changed with a new poll from USA Today. In USA Today’s 2025 Reader’s Choice Awards, the overall winner has been consistent over the last two years, with readers naming a California burger chain as having the best burger in the nation, and it's not In-N-Out.

What Happened to Whataburger’s Ranking?

What's surprising about this list is that Whataburger has slipped from 6th to 10th place, and In-N-Out also fell from second last year to fourth place this year.

Will Whataburger Bounce Back?
