Recently, more and more Texans have been reporting sightings of tarantulas- and there's good reason as to why these eight-legged friends are appearing more frequently!

Texas is home to almost 900 species of spiders, and the Texas Brown Tarantula is one of them! The Texas brown tarantula, or the Aphonopelma hentzi, is the most common, and the largest, species, and it can be found throughout the entire state. These large, hairy spiders are harmless to humans and are known for their shy and non-aggressive nature. Although they look intimidating, tarantulas in Texas rarely bite, and their venom is mild.

In late summer and early fall, people often spot tarantulas more frequently as the males venture out in search of mates, especially around central and west Texas.

Which came as a bit of a surprise for a Mico, Texas resident who told Chron.com that she has seen at least three huge tarantulas in her yard in just the past few weeks!

During mating season, male Texas brown tarantulas emerge from their burrows and begin a determined search for females. Male tarantulas can travel long distances in search of a female, often crossing roads and open fields. This increased activity is why people see them more frequently during mating season!

According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, when a male finds a female's burrow, he performs a “courtship dance” by tapping his legs on the ground to communicate his presence. If the female is receptive, she will allow him to enter.

After mating, the male typically retreats quickly, as female tarantulas sometimes exhibit aggressive behavior toward them, and there’s a risk of the female attacking or even eating him.

After the mating season, male tarantulas generally don’t live long, while females can live for many years, sometimes up to 20 or more.

In the end, it's best to leave these tarantulas alone, and let them get it on!
