When we have found ourselves in some type of emergency, its good to know that help is just a three number dial away, 9-1-1. First responders are then able to get the information they need and get to the scene of the emergency. That information comes from the dispatcher that has taken the emergency call. But what is police could listen to a 9-1-1 call while its happening? That's the system that is in place in the Houston suburb of Missouri City that has high hopes for a much improved, and more informed, response to an emergency situation.

The technology is called Live 911 and was developed by the California company HigherGround, Inc. Live 911 allows police officers to listen to a live 9-1-1 call giving them a better idea of what to expect or how to handle a situation once they arrive on scene. Other police departments in the western part of the United States have been using Live 911 with great success. Missouri City police wanted to be the first in Texas to implement the tech.

The difference now is officers in their car can actually hear the 911 call as it is taking place so nothing is missed.

Lieutenant Rusell Terry, public information officer for the Missouri City Police Department, said,

The difference now is officers in their car can actually hear the 911 call as it is taking place so nothing is missed. We wanted to be the first in the state of Texas to get it. Anything that can assist us in a better response time to the community we serve is outstanding. Anything with technology that helps us is a benefit to the organization as well as the citizens of Missouri City.

Let's hope this is a successful launch in Missouri City. If so, this could be something that East Texas police departments could pick up and hopefully improve their knowledge of the emergency they are responding to.
