(KNUE-FM) We all know that being in law enforcement in Texas is not an easy job. Many officers put their lives on the line each day to serve and protect our communities, so it’s good to hear about anything that will keep them safer. Now our Longview Police Department will be installing bullet-resistant glass in their patrol cars with the assistance of a new $118,000 grant.

Why Longview Police Are Adding Bullet-Resistant Glass

According to CBS 19, this grant is all about keeping officers safe. The grant is coming from the Office of the Texas Governor, in what is being described as a critical layer of protection for officers on the streets.

The Patrol Car Incident That Sparked Change

The funding could not come at a better time as it was just last May when one bullet went through a patrol car windshield and hit the headrest of an officer’s seat. Luckily, the officer was not injured, but the incident created the conversation about enhanced safety equipment.

Police say the goal is not just protecting officers but also ensuring they can continue protecting the community. But I think protecting our officers is a good enough reason to install the bullet-resistant glass.

With the grant money the department plans to outfit every marked patrol unit with the protective glass. This is great as this could help save lives.

No word on exactly when the new bullet-resistant glass will be installed, but the sooner the better.

We thank all law enforcement personnel for what they do every day to serve and protect Texans.
