During the unsettling discussion about the evolution of country music, Tom Petty made an excellent point during an interview with Rolling Stone:

“I hate to generalize on a whole genre of music, but it does seem to be missing that magic element that it used to have. I’m sure there are people playing country that are doing it well, but they’re just not getting the attention that the s—tier stuff gets. But that’s the way it always is, isn’t it?”

To each his own, but I agree with Petty 100%. There are many underrated artists out there 'doing it well,' especially here in the Texas Music Scene. Let's take a look at five artists and bands not quite getting the attention they deserve:

5. Lincoln Durham

I mean... really. How is this guy not more well known? He plays solo most of the time with a gee-tar and kick drum. Oh, did I mention the suitcase? Talk about innovation at it's finest.

4. Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights

Similar to the Dirty River Boys, JTNL does a lot of improv on stage - because they're that good. Also similar to Uncle Lucius, this group has a lot of soul. When it's evident that an artist really feels the music, it makes it that much more enjoyable.

3. Sam Riggs

The first time I heard Riggs, I was preparing for his interview at the station and popped in his [first] single 'Six Feet in the Ground.' Within 10 seconds I knew this was a uniquely talented kid that was going to move mountains with his music. Shortly after meeting him, my opinion was only heightened, as he is one of the most thoughtful artists on the scene. He also has a kickass light show, which he built himself. Seriously, go see him live too.

2. Shane Smith

Even I was only introduced to this band recently (see here for earlier post), which I'm still trying to understand. They just have such a lovely sound - Irish folk meets alternative rock/country. And they put on a very good show. Seriously, go see them live.

1. Uncle Lucius

This is a no-brainer if you ask me. These guys have it -- whatever "it" is. They're unmistakably genuine, down to earth guys and put out killer music. Apparently their hit 'Keep the Wolves Away' almost didn't make it on the album, and now you see it with 130k views on YouTube. Let's keep the buzz going -- these guys deserve it.
