Keep Your Family Safe with These Tips from the Texas Department of Public Safety
During the winter months, Texas Department of Public Safety wants to remind you to make preparations to combat the cold. With snowfall this past weekend and temps falling below average, it's smart to take precautionary measures to keep your family and pets safe on those already potentially dangerous Texas roads.
One of the ways you can prepare for the cold weather is to winterize your vehicles. Check the battery, your windshield wipers, check your tire pressure. Also, keep these emergency supplies in your car just in case you find yourself stranded in the cold:
- Blankets, sleeping bags, gloves and hat
- Cell phone, radio, flashlight, and batteries
- First Aid kit and pocket knife
- High calorie, nonperishable food and bottle water
- Bag of sand or cat litter for tire traction
- Windshield scrapper, tool kit, jumper cables, tow rope and shovel
The Department of Public Safety also wants you to follow additional tips like checking the local weather and keeping an app for last-second updates. On icy roads, drive slowly and increase distance required when stopping and avoid using cruise control. Just because you can't see ice, doesn't mean the road isn't slick. Finally, make sure your vehicle is maintained and keep your gas tank full.
Steven McCraw, Director of the Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw said in a statement:
Texas faces the dangers of winter weather conditions, including freezing temperatures, ice, sleet, and even snow. Texans are urged to stay informed about changing weather in their area and to take steps now to help stay safe during the coming months.
Residence can call 2-1-1 during the winter season, which is the Texas 24-Hour free helpline. You can use that to check on possible community established warming centers or related services in your area.
