Another retailer has evaluated their footprint and has decided to close 159 stores nationwide with five of those stores being in East Texas.

Fred's Stores will be closing the 159 stores because they are under performing or are no longer profitable according to a company press release. After a careful review of the stores' history, factors such as profitability, lease expiration date and other factors went in to making the decision on which stores would be closing.

Fred's will be closing all the stores on the list by the end of May 2019 and has retained a company to facilitate the closing of all 159 locations. The East Texas locations that will be closing are:

  • Gladewater - 601 Broadway Ave.
  • Kilgore - 605 N. Henderson Blvd.
  • Tyler - 1803 E. Gentry Pkwy.
  • Lindale - 1601 S. Main St.
  • Whitehouse - 1123 State Highway 110 N

If customers of these locations had prescriptions being filled, they may now be filled at a Walgreens pharmacy. In 2018 Fred's reached an agreement to sell its' pharmacy patient prescription files in an effort to reduce the company's pharmacy assets.
