Social Distancing Guidelines Extended to Include Pets
No matter where I walk my dog Olive there is always at least one person who wants to pet my "puppy". My 9-year-old dog has yet to get a grey face and has little short legs, I imagine that is why so many people are drawn to my "puppy" dog. "Can I pet your puppy?" my answer is always yes, but according to the latest extension from the CDC I will have to say "No."
According to The New York Post, the CDC is now recommending that pet owners keep their pets top of mind when practicing safe social distancing. “If a person inside the household becomes sick, isolate that person from everyone else, including pets.” The organization said in an advisory.
The CDC is urging pet owners to treat their dogs and cats the same way we would treat our friends and family members. Yes, isolation now includes isolation from family pets. We can handle isolation from other humans, but pets? Now that is punishment for many of us pet lovers.
While officials have stated that more testing is needed to debunk that COVID-19 can be spread from animals to humans, or vice versa, pet owners are being advised to be cautious. While several animals have tested positive for the disease, the CDC reminded us that there is "no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading the virus that causes COVID-19."
