We know that in Texas if you commit a crime there will be consequences for your actions. Which could include time in jail or prison if a judge decides that punishment is warranted. Being in a Texas prison is a place that no one wants to be. But recently, a federal judge has ordered Texas to put air conditioning in all of the state prison facilities. The cost of this could be around $1.5 billion dollars and this is supposed to be completed by the end of 2029.

The ruling came out earlier this week and is considered a win for inmate advocates and their attorneys. According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice about one third of the agency's 104 facilities are fully air conditioned as of the beginning of this month.

A Federal Judge Says Texas Prisons Need Air Conditioning

U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman found that conditions in Texas prisons without air conditioning violate the Eighth Amendment, which protects against cruel and unusual punishment.

Should Texas Prisons Have Air Conditioning?

As you would expect this ruling is getting a lot of attention. Some believe that this is just a basic human thing to do and that with the brutal Texas heat this is a necessity. While others believe that if you commit a crime you need to deal with the punishment no matter what facility you are sent to as you serve your time.
