A Massive $16 Billion Power Project is Coming to East Texas

EAST TEXAS -- A massive new natural-gas power project is moving forward in East Texas, and the price tag could reach around $16 billion. So naturally, people have questions. The proposed natural-gas power generation project would be built in Anderson County, in the Bethel-Cayuga area near Tennessee Colony. NextEra Energy Resources has presented plans for the project to Anderson County commissioners.

Would the $16 Billion Power Project Fuel AI Data Centers?

That's one of the questions that's popped up from time to time on social media, and honestly, it's understandable. Here's a recent one from today in All Things Tyler. We've heard a LOT lately about new AI data centers coming to Texas, including concerns about how much electricity they'll require. So, when people hear "massive new power plant," it's pretty easy to wonder whether the two are connected.

For now, though, I haven't found anything confirming that this particular project is being built for an AI data center. That doesn't mean one couldn't eventually use sme of that power. It simply means we don't have evidence right now that that's the plan.

What Does a Natural Gas Power Plant Mean for East Texas?

There are also some understandable questions about what a natural-gas power plant could mean for the East Texas environment. The EPA says fossil-fuel power plants can produce pollutants including nitrogen oxides, which can contribute to smog and particle pollution and affect respiratory and cardiovascular health.

At the same time, that doesn't mean every type of power plant produces the same pollution, though. Natural gas is generally said to burn cleaner than coal, particularly when it comes to pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and mercury.

So yes, this is a BIG project worth knowing about. And with so much development happening across Texas right now, I think it's fair for East Texans to ask questions about what is being built, why it's being built, and what it could mean for the people who already live here.
