Over the weekend I went to the grocery store to pick up a few items and when I got there it was utter chaos as people was scrambling down the isle picking up toilet paper, water, hand sanitizer and other necessities due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While the coronavirus is very serious and we should take the necessary precautions to ensure safety for ourselves and loved ones, are we overreacting or being smart by loading up on everything we can possibly think of?

According to ABC 7 Chicago, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease says during an interview on Good Morning America the spread of the COVID-19 in the U.S. is going to get worse before it gets better.

With that being said, households should prepare for a pandemic by storing up to two-weeks of food and water per the Department of Homeland Security.

Your supply list should consist of the following:

  • Two-week supply of food and water i.e. Canned food, Frozen vegetables, Pasta, Crackers, and Frozen dinners
  • Check your regular prescription of drugs to make sure a continuous supply at home
  • Non-prescription drugs including pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicine vitamins and fluids with electrolytes
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Have copies of health records and keep an electronic record from doctors, hospitals and pharmacies and store them
  • Talk to families and loved ones and have a plan in action on how they would be cared for if they got sick, or what will be needed to care for them while in your home.

This would be also a good time to consult with your neighbors and discuss emergency planning for the future.
