What to Expect from Winter in Louisiana This Year
As they like to say in Game of Thrones, 'Winter is coming'. But, here in Louisiana, you never know what kind of winter you're going to get. Some years we get snow. Some years we get ice storms. Other years, you can spend Christmas comfortably in your pool. Unlike other parts of the country, year to year, you never know what you're going to get from winter in Louisiana. So, what does winter possibly have in store for us this season? Let's take a look.
Expect More 'Wet' Than 'White' This Winter in Louisiana
The Farmer's Almanac usually does a pretty darn good job predicting the weather. They have nailed calls for snow, ice, below average temps and more in recent years. However, I do want to note that long range forecasting isn't an exact science...but it does give a good idea of what to expect. So, what do they have to say about the Winter forecast this year?
According to their 2024-2025 winter projections, it's going to be a mild winter for most of the country. Due to La Nina conditions, the folks at the Farmer's Almanac is predicting that it will be a warmer and wetter winter for most of the country.
For Louisiana & Texas specifically, they're calling for an extremely mild winter with "near-to-below normal precipitation". Which means unlike a lot of the country that will be seeing a lot of rain and some snow, we won't see as much.
How Cold Will Winter Get in Louisiana?
While there's going to be moisture in the air, it doesn't sound like we're going to see a lot of snow, sleet or rain. But, what about the temps?
As mentioned above, it's supposed to be a slightly warmer but longer winter. What does that mean? According to the Farmer's Almanac, it's going to be a 'warmer than average' winter with temps being roughly 2 degrees warmer than normal. However, winter is supposed to hang on into late February/early March. So, it'll be cooler longer...but not as cold as it usually is. Basically, I guess we can expect a long fall here in Louisiana.
Will It Snow This Winter in Louisiana?
I'm not even going to beat around the bush on this one - it appears that a 'White Christmas' is HIGHLY unlikely this year in Louisiana.
According to both the Farmer's Almanac & NOAA's Long Range Forecast, Louisiana is expected to see below average precipitation. So, maybe at best, we see some flurries somewhere along the way. But the odds of us having another 'Snowpocalypse' this year is highly unlikely.
