Maddie & Tae Talk 2019 Cry Pretty Tour: ‘We’ve Learned So Much’
About one year ago, Carrie Underwood announced her much-anticipated Cry Pretty Tour 360, with a lengthy list of arenas and stadiums among the stops and two stunning all-women opening acts, Maddie & Tae and Runaway June, also on the bill. Now, with the first leg of the trek under their belts, Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye have had some time to reflect on the experience thus far.
"It’s been amazing. We’ve learned so much. This is our first tour being direct support, so this has been a huge step for us," Marlow told The Boot on the 2019 CMT Music Awards blue carpet in June. "We’ve just amped everything up, from the production, from the show, from everything. It’s been a great learning experience so far, and we’re having a blast."
Underwood's Cry Pretty Tour 360 will run through the end of October; the second leg will begin on Sept. 10 in San Diego, Calif. Five months of touring is quite the time commitment, however -- so much so that Marlow had to move her wedding to her longtime partner, Jonah Font, multiple times. Luckily, all of the planning is done, so she can focus on the trek's final run of shows. "The only thing left to do is for Tae and I to go to my bachelorette party and party so hard that we don’t remember it," she says.
Maddie & Tae's busy year doesn't end with their tour with Underwood and Marlow's wedding, though: In April, they released their five-song One Heart to Another EP. It contains the single "Friends Don't," "Die From a Broken Heart" and more.
"I think people have really been able to hear the growth in everything that we’ve been in the past couple of years," Marlow says. "It’s just so exciting to show our fans another side of us."
Both Dye and Marlow agree that the EP has been well-received. With their gorgeous vocal blend and vulnerable songwriting, they've stepped up a level in their career.
"I think people had "Girl in a Country Song" in their head for a long time now, and now "Die From a Broken Heart" is getting more attention," Marlow continues. "It’s just cool for everyone to get to see those deeper dives from us."
As for additional new music, Marlow says "there's a whole thing coming out." Until then, fans will have to keep replaying One Heart to Another or catch the duo live.
