Here in Texas, we take pride in a lot of things—our brisket, our football, and our fiercely independent spirit. But a new report has delivered a tough pill to swallow when it comes to how we care for our youngest Texans.

The Wallethub Study

A recent study from WalletHub has ranked Texas as the second worst state in the entire country for children’s health care. That’s right—just behind Mississippi.

Researchers analyzed all 50 states across several key metrics like the number of pediatricians and family doctors per capita, children’s overall health, obesity rates, dental care, and affordability of medical services. And unfortunately, the Lone Star State didn’t fare well on just about any of those.

Kids in Texas Have Less Access to Pediatricians

According to the data, Texas is among the lowest in the country for access to pediatricians and family doctors, with a high percentage of children living without access to regular care. On top of that, we rank poorly in both dental health and overall health outcomes for kids. One of the most alarming findings? Texas has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity and the highest number of families burdened by unaffordable medical bills.

Chip Lupo, an analyst with WalletHub, explained the stakes in a statement:

“The quality of children’s health care should be one of the most important considerations for parents when deciding where to live. Having access to quality pediatric and dental care, nutritious food and good spaces for recreation from a young age can give children a much better chance of growing up healthy and forming good habits that will last into their adult life.”

It's a Mental Health Issue as Well

Texas health experts have also warned about growing waitlists for children needing mental health care and concerns over limited access to Medicaid benefits for new mothers—issues that could further impact the state’s standing if left unaddressed.

So while we may boast the biggest football stadiums and best BBQ joints in the country, this report is a serious reminder that there’s work to do—especially when it comes to giving Texas kids the healthy start they deserve.

Let’s hope this is the wake-up call we need!
