Brandi Carlile remembers 33-year-old Janice Freeman as an icon the world hadn't fully realized yet. In an emotional post on Instagram, the Grammy-winning singer expresses condolences to Freeman’s family and gratitude for knowing Freeman.

"At 33 years old we lost an icon yesterday the world hadn't fully realized yet," she writes. “My heart is with her beautiful and enduring family today. She was a stronger woman than me and maybe one of the strongest I've ever met."

Freeman died on Saturday after battling pneumonia and suffering a blood clot that traveled to her heart. A spokesperson for Freeman would later share that her husband, Dion, performed CPR until an ambulance took her to the hospital. She’d previously battled cervical cancer successfully and was living with lupus.

“Thank you @mileycyrus for bringing this spirit into my life for even the moment she was here,” Carlile adds. “What we all wouldn’t give to be see the way she saw you.”

Freeman was a Top 11 finalist on Miley Cyrus' team on The Voice in 2017. The two singers remained close after the show ended. In 2018 Freeman revealed that the pop star had found her family housing and covered six months of rent while they got on their feet. She called Cyrus “one of my closes friends” in thanking her.

In addition to her friends, fans and husband she leaves behind a daughter named Hannah and extended family.
