Do You Get The ‘Sunday Blues?’
Yeah, Sunday night. There's something about those few last hours before a new week begins. Before a Monday. In our culture, Mondays have become synonymous with the grind of a new week. For many, this can be a stressful time. Even if you love your work, there's a sense of pressure to get back to the "work week" and a call to face the challenges from which we feel we've had a brief reprieve over the typical two-day weekend. This sense of pressure and sense of at least slight foreboding has been termed in our modern society what has been termed the "Sunday blues."
I've been there. Many of us have. Although I feel thankful that I sincerely love my work and sharing time serving the community through the vehicle that is the media of radio, I know the feeling all too well. About fifteen years ago, I was in a much different place. Life circumstances had driven me to a position where I had a job that caused me much stress, particularly in those last few hours before the new week began. What should've been the few last hours of rest and relaxation before delving into an exciting new week, often felt like the last couple of hours of parole before being returned back to my work week "cell."
As much time as I stressed worrying about the next days to come, seeing as how it wasn't a job that I loved, most of the time the actual playing out of my Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday wasn't nearly as bad as I'd imagined it would be. I just want to encourage you this evening. If you find yourself in this situation currently, try to take a minute to take a birds' eye perspective of the situation and try to remember that a.) this too shall pass and b.) in the grand scheme of things, most of us have it better than we think we do.
I'm not trying to diminish what you may be feeling this evening. I understand. I feel you. It's hard. At the same time, remember that in most cases, everything really is going to be okay. If you're feeling miserable in your current job, take at least one practical step this week to re-evaluate where you are and where you'd like to be. What may seem like an impossible journey now could, in a few years, or even months, seem much more achievable.
And hey, there's a good chance tomorrow could be a good day. In fact, even if you have a job you dislike or a boss who is unfair to you, take your power back and decide to have a good day anyway. That way, no matter what next steps you may take, you're already winning.
Strength to you, my friend. You're not alone. Have a good Monday...and really...think about the one step you could take so that some day your Sundays aren't blue at all. Instead, create a scenario where you can't wait for Monday.
Heck...have a good Monday anyway. They can't stop you.
