Downtown Tyler $25.6M Improvement Project Approved
(Tyler, Texas) The face of downtown Tyler is changing, and within three years, it will have an entirely new look.
What’s Changing in Downtown Tyler?
Among the changes are a new courthouse, a downtown green space, and road reconfiguration.
Construction is currently underway on the new Smith County Courthouse, which will replace the one built in 1955. The new courthouse is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2026.
While this project is happening, a new project will begin this fall that will continue to transform the downtown area of the Rose City.
From Concrete to Green Space
Downtown will be saying goodbye to traffic lights, broken concrete on the square, and to the fountains. All of that will be replaced with traffic circles, grass, and wide, curved sidewalks that will span more than three acres in downtown Tyler.
Joint Approval and Budget Details
The project was approved during a joint meeting of the Tyler City Council and Smith County Commissioners Court on Tuesday, July 8th. The $25.6 million project will cover the new green space, streets, and downtown infrastructure.

What the New Square Will Offer Visitors
Improvements to the current square setting will include more seating for park visitors and space for food trucks. The city approved a construction contract with a firm from Fort Worth.
The project will be conducted in phases to allow for minimal disruption to downtown businesses, with the goal of having the project completed within the next three years.

New Traffic Circles and What Drivers Should Expect
Once completed, Tyler drivers will have to adjust and learn how to navigate downtown with new traffic circles that are going to be installed along Broadway Ave. at Ferguson St. and then at Erwin St. There will be a learning curve, but I'm pretty confident that drivers will handle it with ease.
In the end, Tyler and Smith County residents will have a downtown area they will feel very proud of and one that visitors will get to enjoy as much as they enjoy the roses and azaleas in the spring.
