‘Drive-In’ To The 89th ‘Old Fiddlers’ Reunion’ May 30 In Athens
There's something so uniquely American about listening to true masters of the fiddle, isn't there? If you love music and having jonesin' to get out of the house to enjoy music in the fiddlin' tradition, you don't want to miss the '89th Annual Old Fiddlers Reunion' behind The Texan in The City Parking Lot in Athens on Saturday, May 30 from 5 until 8 p.m.
This is a drive-in concert, so make sure you make a reservation to reserve your spot and learn more here. You can also call 903-675-8039.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent guidelines in place, this year will be a bit different. The usual carnival and traditional competition you may be used to seeing isn't happening this year. But we've been told plenty of dancing and fun fiddling music will definitely be enjoyed in the comfort of your reserved parking space.
Mary Ensign, the planner for the Fiddlers Reunion for nearly 50 years said she's "very happy that we [they will be] able to have the Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion given the current circumstances relating to the Corona Pandemic." She added that the main goal is do all they can to keep this longstanding tradition alive.
So how's all of this gonna work? They've made it possible to reserve "every other space" in the parking lot. They are limiting car occupancy to four persons per vehicle, and cars will need to be turned off during the performances. The performers themselves even have their own lot, too. On May 30, the lot will open at 4 p.m. to give everyone time to get settled. Feel free to bring chairs, ice chests, and have a blast.
Expect to be entertained by fiddlers renowned around the world. If you've interest in participating, the Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion invites you to send them a message via their Facebook page. They're planning to have food from restaurants such as Treehouse Cupcakes, Railway Cafe, Tilo's Cuisine and Bakery, and even the Athens Burger Bar will be open at the Common Area Market. And don't worry, they've made sure to plan for stations for hand washing.
