Logo Lawsuit: Buc-ee’s Sues Another Texas Gas Station Brand
(Tyler, TX) The Buc-ee's Beaver is instantly recognized all over Texas and its rapidly approaching GLOBAL recognition status as they continue to expand all over America.
But its becoming a well known fact that they are VERY PROTECTIVE over their "Beaver" and are willing to take any and anyone to court if they believe a business is trying to infringe on its logo with look-alikes. Let's take a look back at some folks they've taken to court over the years.
In 2018, Buc-ee’s successfully sued fellow Texas travel stop titan Choke Canyon.
A federal jury sided with Buc-ee's in its trademark infringement challenge against Texas based competitor Choke Canyon after the panel found that Choke Canyon's alligator logo violated state and federal trademark law, infringing on Buc-ee's established beaver logo according to CSnews.com.
Since then, they have gotten rid of the "alligator" logo.
In 2023, Buc-ee’s reps vowed to fight against a Mexico-based business that was clearly riffing on the beloved Texas brand.
"BUK-II'S," was about to open up for business in Matamoros Tamaulipas which is 10 minutes south of the Los Indios Texas International Bridge but when photos of their business began circulating and going viral online, Buc-ee's lawyers sharpened their fangs.
Buc-ee's announced plans to after the small Mexican business but they quickly ditched their plans and got rid of the knock-off looking beaver.
Back in November, the gas station giant sued a small Kansas City rival.
In that case, it was a duck giving a thumbs up in front of a yellow circle. While that case still hasn't been resolved, based on the Choke Canyon decision, it might be a tough one for Duckees.
Now Buc-ee's has set it sights on another Texas based brand it claims is infringing on its logo, take a look and you decide.
A small Dallas-based gas station chain called "Super Fuels" is their latest target.
According to mysa.com, Super Fuels, which has a logo of a dog-like figure wearing a red cape with a blue circle behind it, too closely resembles the beaver and the Buc-ee’s trademarked imagery says Buc-ee's attorneys.
Buc-ee’s filed the lawsuit in the Northern District Court of Texas stating that Super Fuels’ logo will confuse consumers into a false sense of security and service they’ve come to expect from Buc-ee’s long-built reputation and argues that the company didn’t start using the animal-centric logo until late 2022.
If you're considering using a logo with an animal in a circle, you might want to reconsider or risk hearing from the beaver's lawyers.
