New Rail Line Could Connect Texas Cities to Mexico
There have been discussions that have gone on for years about the possibility of improving passenger rail service in Texas. But now the discussions are including connecting to some of our neighbors south of the border.
The details came from a recent article released by KVUE, regarding Travis County Judge Andy Brown, he is part of the Texas Passenger Rail Advisory Committee or TPRAC. His goal is to expend the current Amtrak system in place which connects San Antonio to Austin to Dallas and continues north.
Where in Mexico Would the Rail be Connected?
The idea could include a route that connects through Laredo or through McAllen and then to Monterrey, Mexico. The new president of Mexico seems to be excited about the possibilities around this project as it could lead to economic growth in the area.
Who Would Pay for the Project?
For something like this to happen the federal government would need to utilize around 300 million to improve the current rail system. 20% would need to be local money, the federal government would generate the other 80%.
The Texas parts of this project could take 5 to 10 years, to link to Mexico would take longer than that.
It sounds like a great idea and plan to make happen, it's just going to take such a long time and take so much money, only time will tell if this project actually moves forward. If we hear anything new on this project, we will be sure to update this story.
Hearing about new ways to travel in Texas is always exciting, even if it is years away from existence.
