How the Fake Insurance Scam Works

Recently, there was a State Farm agent in Arlington that started getting calls from consumers about their insurance policy, the problem is that agent never issued the policy. Consumers were buying plans online and received fraudulent insurance cards.

It didn’t take long for the insurance agent to notice that “Some of the formatting was off a little bit.” The consumers had no idea they purchased a policy that was not real, some only realizing there was an issue after a car crash or a traffic stop.

The Rising Number of Fraud Cases in Texas

The Texas Department of Insurance says there were 126 fraud reports about fake insurance cards reported in 2025. There were 37 reports within the first three months of 2026. It’s clear that this type of fraud is not stopping.

Things you should avoid when purchasing insurance include being rushed into buying a policy, especially if there is a promotion available only today. It’s important to make sure when buying a policy that the agent is licensed in Texas, and verify the insurance company is legitimate.
