The summer sun is still beaming down on East Texas school kids who are out for the summer and school is the furthest thing from their mind right now. However, in less than a month those school bells will be ringing again.

Tyler ISD students will be gracing the front doors of their schools on Monday, August 20th. That means, in less than a month students will be walking through the front door of their school ready to learn and loaded down with new school supplies. Thanks to #SchoolIsCool event, area volunteers will be handing out backpacks and school supplies to those in need of assistance this year. The #SchoolIsCool event will be held at Harvey Convention Center on Thursday, August 2nd from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Admission is free to this event, where around 2000 backpacks will be handed out to school-aged children and filled with items like:

  • glue sticks
  • colored pencils
  • crayons
  • scissors
  • notebook paper
  • highlighters
  • rulers
  • pens
  • pencils
  • erasers
  • folders
  • and more

All children will need to be present at the time of the event. Event organizers are still looking for contributions to make this event a success. You may donate items by dropping off new school supplies at any City Of Tyler Fire Department or at the Tyler Area Business Education Council office at 315 N. Broadway in Tyler. Check the School Is Cool website for a list of requested donation items. Volunteers are still needed to help make this event a success.

In addition to free school supplies the event will also include free haircuts, health and wellness information, vision and dental screenings, immunizations, after school programs along with Tyler ISD school services.
