While Memorial Day weekend signifies the unofficial beginning of summer in East Texas, it is the weekend where we pause and reflect and give thanks and remembrance to all those service men and women who have given their lives while defending our great nation. Without these brave individuals, we could be living in an entirely different world right now.

This holiday weekend we'll be celebrating by grilling, shopping, and cooling off at an area water park. Memorial Day's arrival signifies the unofficial beginning of summer in East Texas. With that, it looks like summer will unofficially begin this weekend in Canton, Texas this Saturday when the gates at Splash Kingdom Water Park will fly open to welcome sun worshipers and water park enthusiasts who have hopes of having fun in the sun.

Taking a peek at the long-range holiday weekend forecast, it looks like the weather will cooperate for East Texans. There should be bountiful sunshine and temperatures in the mid-to upper-80s so those that want to work on that base tan can float the day away in the lazy river while those that are more adventurous will be sliding down the body and tube slides and catching the waves in the wave pool.

Now Splash Kingdom isn't the only water park opening this weekend, several water parks in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex opened last weekend and kicked off summer a bit earlier. Some have been celebrating summer all year long because it's always a balmy 85 degrees in their indoor facility!

While you relax and celebrate this weekend with friends and family, take some time to remember our men and women of the military who have paid the ultimate price so that we can continue to enjoy our summers - something we should do on a daily basis and not just one time a year.
