Lowering Your Caffeine Intake May Help With Migraines
For many of us, that first...or third cup of coffee in the morning is, like Folger's said, "the best part of waking up." Although maybe not Folger's...but you get the idea. But if you have migraines, you may want to flirt with the idea of embracing decaf.
It's not a happy truth for coffee lovers everywhere, but if you or a loved one suffer from migraines, it may be best to limit the cups of coffee you're drinking throughout the day, according to a recent study at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Led by epidemiology instructor Elizabeth Mostofsky, the results revealed that if you drink more than three caffeinated drinks each day you may be increasing the odds of getting the dreaded migraine. It's not only coffee that's the culprit, though. Tea or too many sodas can have the same effect.
It's surprising to me because there are various medicines on the market that contain caffeine specifically to help with headaches and migraines. Interestingly, it's not just drinking too much coffee or tea that can be the culprit. Ironically, if you're a regular caffeine drinker and then suddenly stop altogether, that could also be a potential trigger.
So, like with many things in life, that moderation and consistency are the keys. If you are choosing to decrease the amount of caffeine you take in each day and you are prone to migraines, do so moderately.
