(Tyler, Texas) Last weekend I was doing my normal grocery shopping at Walmart on South Broadway in Tyler, Texas. It’s my normal routine most weekends, although there was something that happened that doesn’t normally happen, and I am wondering how you would have handled the situation?

Approached by a Stranger in Walmart in Tyler

As I started my shopping I was walking around the store grabbing items before getting my perishable food items, I was near the back of the store by the electronics when a man and his son randomly approached me asking if I could help them.

I didn’t know exactly what the man meant, seeing as how they didn’t have any items in their hands to purchase, instead he said he needed some cash.

Caught Me Off Guard Walking Through Walmart

It was completely out of the blue, so I was almost shocked for a minute, most times I don’t talk to anyone as I am shopping. But after taking a second to realize what he was asking, I asked him if he needed food or help paying for items.

He then said no, I need money for gas.

He Wasn’t Happy with My Answer

I honestly didn’t have any cash on me, so I apologized and said I couldn’t help this time. It was clear the man wasn’t happy about it, but I was happy to help buy some food, but don’t like handing out cash to strangers. Although I didn’t have any cash anyway.

I’ve been debating if I should have handled the situation differently, as no one wants to ask strangers for help inside Walmart stores. But I also have no idea if the man and kid need gas money or if that is just the latest scam going around right now?

How would you have handled the situation? I would love to hear your response. Feel free to email me, billy.jenkins@townsquaremedia.com
