Texas has purchased 2,020 acres in.... well, Texas. The goal is to set the stage for developing a new state park.

Get ready, Texans! The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is bringing a new state park to Burnet County in Central Texas. The 2,020-acre property borders a two-mile stretch of the Colorado River directly across from Colorado Bend State Park. Its rugged hills provide a diverse landscape for outdoor recreation and wildlife conservation.

According to The Dallas Morning News, the new park is located about 10 miles upstream from Lake Buchanan, further expanding Texas' natural spaces.

This 2,020 acre-purchase in Central Texas is a significant move to enhance the natural reserves in the Lone Star State.

I, for one, am encouraged by this move. As more and more people move to Texas, some natives have expressed concern that expansion, although needed, would begin to encroach on the natural beauty of Central Texas. Since I was born in that area, this means quite a bit.

The strategic expansion of state parks in Texas

The acreage Texas has acquired is in a strategic location that will complement existing state parks. This is well thought out, given that this creates a contiguous network of protected areas, safeguarding not only our ecology but future opportunities for outdoor activities like camping, hiking, and wildlife observation.

Kudos to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD)

The TPWD has been excellent in this endeavor and others. For example, back in August 2024, they approved the purchase of 630 acres right next to Enchanted Rock (one of my favorite places on Earth), expanding the state park by nearly 40 percent. Then, in January of this year, another 3,073 acres were purchased, nearly tripling the park's size.

How are the purchases funded, and what are the future plans?

These are funded by the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, established in 2023 when S.J.R. 84 passed during the 88th Texas Legislature. This $1 billion fund is dedicated to expanding recreational areas and conserving our stunning natural habitats.

I can't wait to visit. So grateful.
