New Movies in Theaters: 'Water for Elephants,' 'Madea's Big Happy Family'

Two new movies are opening nationwide this this weekend. One is a film adaptation of the bestselling novel 'Water for Elephants,' starring Robert Pattinson (in a non-vampire role) and Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon.

The other is a sequel in a long line of sequels in the 'Madea' franchise, called 'Madea's Big Happy Family.' It's hard to say which film will do better at the box office, as one looks to be aiming for Oscar consideration while the other is an ensemble comedy with a well-known leading character.

'Rio' Flies High at Weekend Box Office

Once again, an animated movie found itself ruling the weekend box office.

In this case, it was 'Rio.' The high-flying kids' movie, which features the voice talent of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg and more, pulled in an estimated $40 million, making it the year's best opening thus far.

Coming in at a distant second was the much-anticipated 'Scream 4,' which opened with an underwhelming $19.3 million. That number is especially disappointing, considering 'Scream 3' grossed $34.7 million in its opening weekend 11 years ago.

'Scream 4' opens today in theaters everywhere. 'Scream' is my all-time favorite horror flick! I didn't care much for 'Scream 2 & 3' but I might give 'Scream 4' a try. Rotten tomatoes gives it a 59%, but audiences are more optimistic, giving Scream 4 a 78%. Check out the trailer and see what you think, after the jump.
