There’s a 14-Year-Old Chili World Record That’s Still Held in Dallas
(Dallas, Texas) - There are lots of well known brands that have started in Texas. Dr Pepper is one. Shiner Bock is another. Wolf Brand Chili is always great. These brands, and many others, have become favorites around the world.
Another major creation in Texas is Fritos. This Texas food creation goes back to the 1930s that's made of corn and is loved by millions. It's also great with chili poured on top covered in onions and cheese.
14-Year-Old Frito Pie World Record Still Held in Dallas
Fritos started in 1932 in San Antonio by the Charles Elmer (C.E.) Doolin family. Doolin bought a recipe for fried corn chips and began to add his own touches to it in his mom's kitchen. Once he perfected his recipe, he began selling Fritos from the family's garage. They quickly grew and built production plants in several states and even started several farms to grow their corn.
Fritos was one of the first companies to invest in Disneyland that was being built in California in the 1950's. They eventually merged with H.W. Lay and Company to become Frito-Lay which later merged with Pepsi to become PepsiCo.

Frito Pie World Record That's Still Held in Dallas
There are a couple of stories of how Frito pie got its start. One story involves Charles Doolin's mother who would serve his Fritos in a casserole that was topped with cheese and diced onions. Another story says that in 1960, Teresa Hernandez began selling bags of Fritos that would have chili poured over them at a Woolworth's in New Mexico (xlntfoods.com). Whether one, or both, of those stories is true remains to be seen, but man oh man is Frito pie good.
I'm gonna take you back to October 1, 2012 at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. At that time, Fritos was celebrating its 80th anniversary. To do that, they attempted to make the world's largest Frito pie. Spoiler alert, they succeeded.
A total of 635 bags of Fritos, 660 cans of Hormel Chili (no beans, because it's not chili if it has beans) and 580 bags of shredded cheddar cheese was used to set the world record. The pie weighed in at 1,325 pounds and measured 133-square-feet. It was able to feed 5,000 people that day.
The record has not been broken since that day in 2012. Maybe when Fritos celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2032, they could make a run at.
