After 82 years in business, Joann is saying goodbye

Before filing for bankruptcy protection in mid-February, the company filed for bankruptcy protection in March of 2024. After the initial filing, the company emerged as a leaner and stronger-looking company with less debt. However, after a brief surge in sales, Joann continued to struggle.

The reason behind JOANN filing for bankruptcy for a second time

The retailer blames higher costs from shipping overseas products, as well as a downturn in demand for fabric and crafting supplies. The company says in a statement,

"After carefully reviewing all available strategic paths to address our ongoing industry, economic and financial challenges, JOANN and its financial stakeholders determined that initiating a court-supervised sale process is the best course of action to maximize the value of the business. Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN."
