These Are the Top 5 Best Sandwiches in Tyler — Have You Tried Them?

The Mother Clucker at Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q has been receiving major love for almost two years since it was invented by then-pitmaster Jordan Jackson. And rightfully so. In 2014 Texas Monthly named the Mother Clucker the best barbecue sandwich in Texas (again, rightfully so). That's when the Clucker went from popular to the most desirable prom date known to man.

What's on it? Smoked chicken thigh, cheddar cheese, fried egg and spicy barbecue mayonnaise on jalapeno cheese sourdough. Make it a 'Cadillac Clucker' with candied bacon and guacamole, and you have one of the best sandwiches on Planet Earth. Seriously.

Also at Stanley's: The Shrove (chopped beef, grilled ham and cheese) is undoubtedly the most underrated sandwich. And you can't forget about the always-popular Brother-In-Law (chopped brisket, hot links and cheese).

I've long considered myself to be a Reuben nerd, and to this day I haven't had one that's been able to stand next to the Reuben at Lola's Handcrafted Sandwiches. At the corner of a seemingly quiet shopping center before the stoplight in Gresham sits Lola's. Father and son Chris and Andrew Czop have mastered the art of sandwich-making, but it's their Reuben that defies all logic. If you haven't had it yet, make the trip. Now.

What's on it? Corned beef, homemade sauerkraut, swiss cheese and homemade Russian dressing on perhaps the best bread you'll ever put in your mouth.

Also at Lola's: The Cuban is legit, as is the TABC (turkey, avocado, bacon and cheddar). And don't skip out on the grilled cheese here, it's for grown-ups.

Every time I'm asked where to find the best burger in Tyler and I respond, "Where's Rufus," I almost always get a sideways look. "Really?," they ask. My next response is always the same: "Trust me." Where's Rufus might be just a bar on the outside, but the best burger in Tyler is made here. My go-to is the Hawaii 5-0, though you can't go wrong with the Big Green Muenster (pictured below) either.

What's on it? The Hawaii 5-0 has perfectly cooked beef, cheese, grilled pineapple and a legit pineapple habanero sauce on jalapeno sourdough. It's got some kick, but if you're a pineapple fan, you won't find a better burger in Tyler.

Also at Where's Rufus: All the burgers are great, including the BBQ, bacon and cheddar burger. But don't skip out on a hot dog either (the Hangover dog is the best).

Is a gyro really a sandwich? While you're sitting there wondering that in your mind, I'm gonna roll with it. It's meat between bread, dangit! The O.G. is the original gyro at What About Kabob in Tyler, and you'll be thinking "OMG" about the O.G. if you haven't already. The delicious beef and lamb lie inside amazing pita bread for one of the best gyros you'll ever have.

What's on it? Beef and lamb cooked on a vertical spit, stuffed in homemade pita bread with lettuce, tomatoes onions and Tiki sauce.

Also at What About Kabob: Make the O.G. "Tejas" style with cheese and jalapenos. You won't regret it.

For 35 years Jucys has been a fixture in East Texas -- and for good reason. The beef that goes into their burgers is hand-grinded every day. You'll have to wait a good minute to get your food, but this isn't a fast food hamburger. I call Jucys my "Old Faithful" when it comes to getting a great burger at any given time.

What's on it? It's an old-fashioned hamburger. Just don't forget the cheese.
