With temperatures dropping in East Texas, maybe we will collectively get a better night's sleep. According to research, sleeping in a cold room is better for your health.

The cold front is blowing through today, and temperatures are expected to drop below freezing tonight, but don't adjust your thermostat just yet.

In an article at simplemost.com, Dr. Christopher Winter, Medical Director at Charlottesville Neurology & Sleep Medicine, states that there is an optimal temperature for sleeping. He claims that you should sleep in a room with a temperatures somewhere between 60-67 degrees.

This temperature helps you fall asleep more quickly, rest more thoroughly, and help our body release the anti-aging hormone melatonin. Dr Cameron Van den Heuvel, of the UniSA’s Centre for Sleep Research in Australia says,

“About one to one and a half hours before falling sleep, the body starts to lose heat from its central core and that brings on increased feelings of tiredness in normal healthy adults. These physiological changes happen well before going to bed and may be occurring before people realize them.”

So before you crank up your thermostat tonight, think about your sleep. Helping your body drop its internal temperature sooner can help you get to sleep faster, and rest easy without your body fighting to regulate its temperature.
